Mia Marine (born Gustafsson) is well known as a lively and exuberant musician from Värmland in Sweden. Besides being a very skilledmiasolo_01 performer, she is also well known as an inspiring teacher. Her music is often in the borderlands between traditional folkmusic, modern accoustic music and chamber music.

Mia plays with a lot of different bands, such as Marine & Roswall and MP3. She also plays with Lena Willemark in her project "Blåferdi" and on occasion with other singers, like for instance Sofia Karlsson and Ulrika Bodén. Earlier projects include Marin/Marin, NID, Livsverket, Södling sessions, Esbjörn Hazelius, and Sweden's first folk-string orchestra Bowing 9. She has worked with the legendary choreographer Mats Ek, creating music for his version of "The Emigrants" at the Royal Dramatic Theatre in Stockholm. Mia has graduated from the Royal College of Music in Stockholm, and worked full time as a freelance musician for many years, before beginning to work part time as a violin teacher in higher education.

She´s an experienced composer taking inspiration mainly from traditional music, but also from jazz and classical music. Her music is recorded on several albums over the years, for instance on "Bowing 9 - Force majeure" (Sweden's first folk string orchestra, 2011) and on "Tiden" (Marin/Marin, a duo with five string violin and five string viola, 2016).

She teaches part time at The Academy of Music and Drama in Gothenburg, and has her very own online academy www.fiddleacademy.com with participants from all over the world. Earlier teaching assignments have been for instance at Malungs folkhögskola, Musikhögskolan Ingesund, The Royal College of Music in Stockholm, Musikhögskolan Malmö, Eric Sahlström Institutet in Tobo and at many different workshops around the world.

At her workshops she usually combines teaching groovy tunes and arrangements with creating new arrangements together with the participants. Instrument technique and playing for dancing are other special interests that often pop up in the teaching process.

Mia is touring all over the world. She is also a frequent studio musician, and has recorded many albums. You can find several of them in the webshop.

"There is no doubt about it; Mia Marine is one of our foremost young fiddlers, both with regards to musicality and technicality. Her playing has bold expression and a catching energy; it bounds with joy, charm and brilliance. It is a playing that doesn’t give in to artistic challenges and depth – a playing of highest quality. She has deep roots in the traditional music of western Värmland and is for me in many ways a typical ‘Värmlänning’ – standing with her feet firmly on the ground, but in the middle of the world. During the time I have known her she has also adopted playing styles and repertoires from amongst others Uppland and Gästrikland in such a way that they have become an integrated part of her musical identity – with complete confidence and great curiosity.

Mia is also an unusually creative and all-round musician, she composes, arranges and improvises with the same self-assured musicality that she has in her playing. She is equally comfortable in the roles of ensemble musician and soloist. In addition she is also a gifted and talented pedagogue, which is not always the case with distinguished musicians. A colleague of mine described Mia to me before I had met her with the words ”she could become anything, she is brilliant” – I couldn’t agree more and I am pleased that she chose folk music as her expression.”

Sven Ahlbäck, professor of Swedish Folk Music at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm, composer and musician.
